Replacing an Expansion Module (for a Smart Disk Enclosure)
This section describes how to replace an expansion module.
Impact on the System
During the replacement of an expansion module, the system switches services from ports on this module to ports on the other expansion module in the same disk enclosure. Only one expansion module is working, causing the system reliability to degrade. You are advised to replace an expansion module during off-peak hours.
Prerequisites
- The spare part is on hand.
- The expansion module that you want to replace has been located.
You can locate a component in either of the following ways:
- Locating a component based on alarms in DeviceManager: On the Alarms and Events page of DeviceManager, view the help information and determine the ID of the component to be replaced. Then locate the component at your site based on its ID.
- Locating a component based on the status of its Running/Alarm indicator: For details about the indicators on different components, see "Indicator Introduction" of each component in the Product Description specific to your product model and version.
- You have confirmed that the cables of the expansion module to be replaced are properly connected using Huawei Storage Product Networking Assistant (https://support.huawei.com/onlinetoolsweb/sna/#/home).
- The cable connection positions of the expansion module are labeled on the cables.
- The cables have been disconnected from the expansion module that you want to replace.
Before removing an RDMA cable, gently push the connector of the cable inward. Then pull the plastic ring on the connector outward until the cable is completely removed from the expansion module.
Precautions
- Remove and insert an expansion module with even force. Excessive force may damage the appearance of the expansion module or cause faults.
- An expansion module must be replaced within ten minutes. Otherwise, the system heat dissipation is compromised.

Procedure
- Check status before replacement.
- Check system status.
Start SmartKit and choose Home > Storage > Routine Maintenance > Health Check. On the Health Check page, perform inspection as instructed. For details, see Checking System Status.
If any items fail the inspection, rectify the faults by performing the recommended actions in the inspection reports. Ensure that all other parts except the parts to be replaced are working properly.
- Perform a pre-replacement check.
Start SmartKit and choose Home > Storage > Parts Replacement > More > Parts Replacement (CRU). On the CRU replacement page, complete the check before the replacement as prompted. For details, see Replacing a CRU.
You can proceed to next steps only when all items pass the pre-replacement check and the replacement page is displayed. If any item fails, rectify the fault as prompted.
- Check system status.
- Wear an ESD wrist strap.
- Open the latches on the ejector levers on both sides of the expansion module, and hold the ejector levers to pull out the expansion module, as shown in Figure 7-153.
- Put the removed expansion module into an ESD bag.
- Take the spare part out of its ESD bag.
- Open the ejector levers of the expansion module to be installed, insert the expansion module into the empty slot, and push the expansion module into the slot as much as possible, as shown in Figure 7-154.
- Press and hold the ejector levers and push the expansion module inwards until the expansion module is fully inserted into the slot, as shown in Figure 7-155.
Hold the ejector levers on both sides and push the expansion module into the slot with even force to prevent poor contact between the expansion module and the backplane.
- Connect the cables as labeled.
- Wait about five minutes and check the status of the Power and Alarm indicators on the expansion module to determine whether the expansion module has been successfully installed. Figure 7-156 shows the locations of the Power and Alarm indicators.
- If the Power indicator is steady on and the Alarm indicator is off, the expansion module has been successfully installed.
- If the Power indicator is off or the Alarm indicator is steady on, the newly installed expansion module is faulty, the expansion module slot is faulty, or the expansion module is incorrectly installed.

- Confirm the replacement.
- Perform a post-replacement inspection.
After the parts replacement, return to the SmartKit page and click Replaced. Then complete the check after the replacement as prompted.
- Check the system status after the replacement.
Return to the home page, choose Home > Storage > Routine Maintenance > Health Check, and check the system status again. If any inspection item fails, rectify the fault based on the suggestions in the inspection report.
- After the preceding procedure is complete, check services on the host for storage-related errors. If any storage-related error is reported, contact Huawei technical support.
- Perform a post-replacement inspection.
Follow-up Procedure
After the expansion module is replaced, label it to facilitate subsequent operations.
