Replacing a Data Switch
This section describes how to replace a data switch.
Impact on the System
During the replacement of a data switch, the data switch is powered off. This causes all I/O forwarding workload to be transferred to another data switch, degrading the system reliability.
Prerequisites
- A spare part is on hand.
Ensure that the model of the new switch is the same as that of the replaced switch.
- For a 2 U controller enclosure, if switch networking is used, only Huawei CE6865-48S8CQ-EI switches are supported. Ensure that the switch software version is V200R005C10SPC800 (with the V200R005C10SPH017 patch installed) or later. For details about how to query and upgrade the switch version, see the product documentation of CE6865-48S8CQ-EI switches. To obtain the documentation, log in to Huawei's technical support website (https://support.huawei.com/enterprise/), enter the product model (for example, CE6865) in the search box, and click the suggested path beneath the search box. On the documentation page of the product model, search for, browse through, and download the desired documentation.
- For a 4 U controller enclosure, if switch networking is used, only Huawei CE8850-32CQ-EI or CE8850-SAN switches are supported.
- For CE8850-32CQ-EI switches, ensure that the switch software version is V200R005C10SPC800 (with the V200R005C10SPH017 patch installed) or later. For details about how to query and upgrade the switch version, see the product documentation of CE8850-32CQ-EI switches. To obtain the documentation, log in to Huawei's technical support website (https://support.huawei.com/enterprise/), enter the product model (for example, CE8850) in the search box, and click the suggested path beneath the search box. On the documentation page of the product model, search for, browse through, and download the desired documentation.
- For CE8850-SAN switches, ensure that the switch software version is V300R020C10SPC200 or later. For details about how to query and upgrade the switch version, see the product documentation of CE8850-SAN switches. To obtain the documentation, log in to Huawei's technical support website (https://support.huawei.com/enterprise/), enter the product model (for example, CE8850) in the search box, and click the suggested path beneath the search box. On the documentation page of the product model, search for, browse through, and download the desired documentation.
- The data switch to be replaced has been located.
- The cable connection position on the data switch to be replaced has been clearly marked.
- The data switch to be replaced has been powered off.
Precautions
Remove or insert a data switch with even force. Excessive force may damage the appearance or connectors of the data switch.
Tools and Materials
- Phillips screwdriver (M3 to M6)
- ESD wrist strap
- ESD bag
- ESD table
- Labels
Procedure
- Perform a pre-replacement check.
- Check system status.
Start SmartKit and choose Home > Storage > Routine Maintenance > Health Check. On the Health Check page, perform inspection as instructed. For details, see Checking System Status.
If any items fail the inspection, rectify the faults by performing the recommended actions in the inspection reports. Ensure that all other parts except the parts to be replaced are working properly.
- Check the status of the parts to be replaced.Start SmartKit and choose Home > Storage > Parts Replacement > Parts Replacement. On the Parts Replacement page, click FRU Replacement. Then complete the check before the replacement as prompted. For details, see Replacing an FRU.
You can proceed to next steps only when all items pass the pre-replacement check and the replacement page is displayed. If any item fails, rectify the fault as prompted.
- Check system status.
- Wear an ESD wrist strap.
- Remove cables connected to the data switch that you want to replace.
For the ground cable of the data switch, you only need to remove the end that connects to the cabinet in this step. (The other end of the cable is secured to a side of the data switch and will be removed after the data switch is removed from the cabinet.)
- Remove the data switch from its cabinet, as shown in Figure 8-147.
- Use the Phillips screwdriver to remove the M6 screws from the data switch's mounting ears.
- Pull the data switch out of the cabinet along guide rails and place it on the ESD table.
- Remove the ground cable and mounting ears from the data switch, as shown in Figure 8-148.
- Use the Phillips screwdriver to remove the ground cable from the data switch.
- Use the Phillips screwdriver to remove the mounting ears from both sides of the data switch.
- Take the spare part out of its ESD bag and place it on the ESD table.
- Install the ground cable and mounting ears on the spare part, as shown in Figure 8-149.
- Use the Phillips screwdriver to install the ground cable on a side of the data switch.
- Use the Phillips screwdriver to install the mounting ears on both sides of the data switch.
- Place the data switch to be installed in the cabinet, as shown in Figure 8-150.
- Slide the data switch into the cabinet along the guide rails.
- Use M6 screws to secure the data switch in the cabinet.
- Verify that the data switch is horizontally installed and firmly secured.
- Connect cables to the data switch and power it on.
- After the Power indicator is steady on, check whether each component is working properly.
- If working properly, it indicates that the data switch has been successfully installed.
- If not working properly, it indicates that cable connections are incorrect, components are incorrectly installed, or the data switch is faulty.
After the check is complete, configure the IP address of the data switch and SSH login user information. For details, see "Configuring New IP Addresses for the Management Network Ports on the Switches and SSH Login User Information" in the installation guide of the corresponding product model.
- Confirm the replacement.
- Perform a post-replacement inspection.
After the parts replacement, return to the SmartKit page and click Replaced. Then configure the data switch and complete the check after the replacement as prompted.
- Check system status.
On the Parts Replacement page, click Inspection to check the system status again. If any item fails inspection, rectify the fault based on the suggestions in the inspection report.
- After the preceding procedure is complete, check services on the host for storage-related errors.
- Perform a post-replacement inspection.
Follow-up Procedure
- After the data switch is replaced, label it to facilitate subsequent operations.
- For details about how to configure the IP address, see Installation Guide of the appropriate version.
