Observing Port Specifications
Configuration Modes
are two modes for configuring observing ports: single configuration and batch configuration. Both modes can be used simultaneously. If multiple observing ports are configured in a batch, these observing ports are bound to the same mirrored port. Therefore, batch configuration simplifies the configuration of 1:N mirroring. Figure 8-5 shows batch configuration of observing ports.
Calculating the Number of Available Observing Ports
The number of available observing ports depends on the total number of observing ports to which mirrored ports have been bound in the inbound and outbound directions. The number of observing ports to which a mirrored port is bound in the inbound direction is calculated separately to those bound in the outbound direction. When the same observing port is bound to the mirrored port in both the inbound and outbound directions, the numbers of available observing ports for inbound and outbound packets are both reduced by 1.
As shown in Figure 8-6, a maximum of six observing ports can be configured on an ET1D2X12SSA0 card. Inbound packets on all the mirrored ports can be copied and sent to a maximum of four observing ports, and outbound packets can be copied and sent to a maximum of two observing ports. If inbound and outbound packets on the mirrored ports are copied and sent to the same observing port, the numbers of available observing ports for inbound and outbound packets are 3 and 1 respectively. Therefore, the total number of available observing ports is 4 (3 plus 1) but not 5 (6 minus 1).
Specifications
Table 8-1 lists the observing port specifications for different series cards.
You can configure a maximum of eight observing ports on a device, excluding the observing ports configured in a batch on the X series cards.

- A maximum of 64 observing ports can be configured in a batch, and you can configure a maximum of eight batches. Theoretically, mirrored ports can be bound to a maximum of 512 (8 x 64) observing ports in the inbound direction.
- If one observing port is configured each time, the observing port configuration can be performed a maximum of eight times, and mirrored ports can be bound to a maximum of eight observing ports in the inbound direction.
- When single configuration and batch configuration are both used, the observing port configuration can be performed a maximum of eight times, and the maximum number of observing ports to which mirrored ports can be bound in the inbound direction ranges between 8 and 512.
