Replacing a System Subrack
This section describes how to replace a system subrack.
Impact on the System
Replacing a system subrack interrupts services running on the system subrack. Exercise caution when performing this operation.
Prerequisite
- A replacement system subrack is ready.
- The system subrack that you want to replace has been located.
You can locate a component in one of the following ways:
- Locating a component based on alarms in DeviceManager: On the Alarms and Events page of DeviceManager, view the help information and determine the ID of the component to be replaced. Then locate the component at your site based on its ID.
- Locating a component based on its location indicator: You are advised to set the location indicator of the component in DeviceManager. For details, see the Online Help of DeviceManager. Then, locate the component at your site based on its location indicator.
- Locating a component based on the status of its Running/Alarm indicator: For details about the indicators on different components, see Indicator Introduction of each component in the Product Description specific to your product model and version.
- The cable connection positions of the system subrack that you want to replace are labeled on the cables.
- Services running on the system subrack that you want to replace have been stopped.
Precaution
- Remove and insert a system subrack with even force. Excessive force may damage the appearance or connectors of the system enclosure.
- To prevent personal injury, arrange three persons to move a fully configured system subrack.
Tools and Materials
- Phillips screwdriver (M3 to M6)
- ESD wrist strap
- ESD bag
- ESD table
- Labels
- Product model bar
- Protective gloves
- Nameplate
- Intel label
- Device information label
Procedure
- Check status before replacement.
- Check system status.
Start SmartKit and choose Routine Maintenance > Health Check. On the Health Check page, perform inspection as instructed. For details, see Checking System Status.
If any items fail the inspection, rectify the faults by performing the recommended actions in the inspection reports. Ensure that all other parts except the parts to be replaced are working properly.
- Check the status of the parts to be replaced.
Start SmartKit and choose Parts Replacement > Parts Replacement. On the Parts Replacement page, click FRU Replacement. Then complete the check before the replacement as prompted. For details, see Replacing an FRU.
You can proceed to next steps only when all items pass the pre-replacement check and the replacement page is displayed. If any item fails, rectify the fault as prompted.
- Check system status.
- Wear an ESD wrist strap and remove the cables from the system subrack that you want to replace.
- Take the spare part out of its ESD bag and place it on the ESD table.
- Insert the product model bar into the upper part of the system subrack. The arrow in Figure 5-39 shows the installation position of the product model bar.
Multiple different product model bars are often included in the product. Please select the one that contains identical information to the product model bar on the removed system enclosure.
- Remove components from the system subrack that you want to replace and reinstall them to their original positions in the replacement system subrack.
- Remove the system subrack that you want to replace from the cabinet, as shown in Figure 5-40.
- Open the mounting ear cover. Use the Phillips screwdriver to remove the M6 screws from the system subrack.
- Pull the system subrack out of the cabinet along guide rails and place it on the ESD table.
- Optional: Attach the nameplate and the Intel label to the same positions on the replacement system subrack as those on the removed system subrack, as shown in Figure 5-41. a indicates the nameplate location, and b indicates the Intel label location.
Two different nameplates are often included in the product. Please select the one that contains identical information to the nameplate on the removed system subrack.
- Optional: Pull the information plate of the system subrack. (If you face the front part of the system subrack, the information plate is located at the lower right of the enclosure, as shown in Figure 5-42. Gently pull the information plate, but not away from the enclosure.) Attach the device information label to the information plate. After that, push the information plate back to the enclosure.
You can attach the device information labels to both the front or back of the information plate. The installation positions must be the same as those on the replacement system subrack. If a label has been attached to one side of the information plate, you only need to attach the device information label with a QR code to the other side of the information plate. Attaching the device information plate helps engineers more easily identify and maintain devices.
- Install the replacement system subrack into the cabinet, as shown in Figure 5-43.
- Slide the system subrack into the cabinet along guide rails.
- Use M6 screws to fix the system subrack in the cabinet. Close the mounting ear cover.
- Ensure that the system subrack is horizontally installed and tightly screwed.
- Connect cables to the system subrack and press the Power button to power on the storage device.
- When the Power indicator is steady on, check whether each component is in normal state.
- If yes, the system subrack is successfully installed.
- If no, cables are incorrectly connected, components are incorrectly installed, or the newly installed system subrack is faulty.
- Confirm the replacement.
- Perform a post-replacement inspection.
After the replacement, on the SmartKit page, click Replaced. Perform the post-replacement inspection as prompted.
- Check the system status after the replacement.
On the Parts Replacement page, click Inspection to check the system status again. If any item fails inspection, rectify the fault based on the suggestions in the inspection report.
- Check services on a host for storage-related errors.
- Perform a post-replacement inspection.
Follow-up Procedure
After the system subrack is replaced, label it to facilitate subsequent operations.
