Block Virtualization Process
Figure 2-1 shows the block virtualization process.
- The storage system groups disks into multiple disk domains. For VM services, SAS disks are used to accommodate VM operating systems; NL-SAS disks are used to store service data. Multiple storage pools can be created in a disk domain.
- The storage system divides the storage media in storage tiers into fixed-size CKs.
- CKs in a storage tier form CKGs and hot spare space based on the RAID policy and hot spare space policy configured on DeviceManager.
- The storage system divides CKGs into extents based on the data migration granularity configured on DeviceManager. The extent is the smallest unit of a thick LUN.
- When a user creates a thin LUN, the storage system divides extents into grains and maps the grains to the thin LUN for more precise management over the storage space.
