Creating a VMware Snapshot
After a snapshot is created and activated for a VMware instance, a data copy of the VMware instance is generated. Users can read and write the copy without changing the source data, helping improve data security.
Prerequisites
- At least one VMware instance has been created on the storage system.
- The HyperSnap license is valid.
Context
- A snapshot created for a VMware instance that does not use shared folders is actually a snapshot group. When you create a snapshot for a VMware instance, you actually create a snapshot for each LUN contained in the instance. You can choose Data Protection > Snapshot to view the snapshot of each LUN contained in a VMware instance.
- A snapshot created for a VMware instance that uses shared folders is actually a snapshot of a file system.
Procedure
- Log in to DeviceManager.
- Choose
Provisioning >
Application >
VMware.
- Select the VMware instance for which you want to create a snapshot and click Create Snapshot.
The Create Snapshot dialog box is displayed.
- Set snapshot parameters.

Name of a VMware snapshot.
- The name must be unique.
- If you create a snapshot for a VMware application whose resource type is file system, the snapshot name contains 1 to 127 characters including letters, digits, and underscores (_).
- If you create a snapshot for a VMware application whose resource type is LUN, the snapshot name contains 1 to 31 characters including letters, digits, underscores (_), hyphens (-), and periods (.).
NOTE:Choose Provisioning > Application > VMware and view the resource type of a VMware application on the displayed page.

Activate Now
If this option is selected, a snapshot is activated immediately after creation. The parameter is invalid when a VMware instance is a file system.
Activate Now
- Confirm your settings.
- Click OK.
The Execution Result dialog box is displayed, indicating that the operation succeeded.
- Click Close.
- Click OK.
Follow-up Procedure
After VMware snapshots are created, you can select a VMware instance and click the Snapshot tab in Details. Then you can operate the snapshot of the VMware instance based on service requirements.
