Licensing Requirements and Limitations for VSs
Involved Network Elements
No other network elements (NEs) are required.
Licensing Requirements
The VS function is controlled by a license and is disabled on a new device by default. To use the VS function, apply for and purchase the license from the equipment supplier.

Precautions
A physical system (PS) supports a maximum of 16 VSs (including the Admin-VS). By default, seven VSs in group mode can be created. To create more VSs in group mode, adjust the number of VLANs occupied by VSs.
It is recommended that at most four VSs with the routing calculation function be deployed on a PS.
Only the PS administrator can create VSs and allocate resources to VSs.
VSs can be created only when the PS has sufficient physical and logical resources to be allocated.
Only physical ports on LPUs can be assigned to VSs. However, stack member ports and Eth-Trunk member ports cannot be assigned to VSs.
After a physical port is assigned to a VS, the port cannot be configured as a stack member port.
There is no mapping between a logical resource template and a VS. After a logical resource template is loaded on a VS, modifying the logical resource template does not affect the VS. The modified logical resource template takes effect only after it is loaded to the VS again.
Different IP addresses need to be configured for the management interfaces of different VSs.
- Other ports on the forwarding chip where stack member ports reside can be allocated to VSs in group mode (stack member ports will not be assigned to VSs).
Support for Features in a VS
Feature |
Support in a VS |
---|---|
Hardware management |
Hardware operations, such as device restart, card reset, and e-label backup, can be performed only in the Admin-VS and are not supported in non-Admin-VSs. VS information such as CPU and memory usage can be viewed in non-Admin-VSs. |
Patch |
Only the Admin-VS can have patches installed. |
License |
Only the Admin-VS can have the license activated. |
Number of VTY users |
The Admin-VS supports a maximum of 21 VTY users. A non-Admin-VS supports a maximum of 20 VTY users. |
Port split |
Ports assigned to non-Admin-VSs cannot be split. |
CSS |
|
Multicast |
Multicast functions can be configured in any VS in group mode. |
VXLAN |
VXLAN functions can be configured in any VS in group mode. |
M-LAG |
|
NTP |
NTP can only be configured in Admin-VS. After a VS is created, the non-Admin-VS system time is the same as the Admin-VS system time. |
Priority Mapping |
You can create a DiffServ domain, enable the mapping between PHBs and DSCP/802.1p priorities in the outbound direction, and configure the mapping between CoS values and queue indexes in all VSs in group mode. The configurations take effect for the local VS. |
Port Assignment on Cards
You must assign ports to VSs in group mode based on port groups. That is, assign or delete ports in the same port group to or from the same VS.
Table 2-4 lists the number of port groups on different types of cards.

Contiguous ports on a card are added to each port group in sequence. For example, a CEL24LQFD-G card has two port groups, and ports 40GE1/0/0 to 40GE1/0/11 are added to one port group, and ports 40GE1/0/12 to 40GE1/0/23 are added to the other port group. |
