NE16E/08E/05: Service Intermittence Due to a Poor-Quality Trunk Circuit in the MP Binding

Issue Description

The customer reports that the service between two offices interconnected by MP binding of multiple 2M E1 interfaces on the NE16E is intermittent. It is found that there is quality problem with one of the trunk circuits.

Handling Process

Currently, the MP binding datagram on the NE16E/08E/05 is packet-based, in other words, it fragmentates the packet and distributes the fragments evenly among the physical links. If one link does not work well and happens to maintain normal transmission of the link maintenance messages, the equipment itself cannot be aware of the fault. You can only find and disable the faulty circuit.

Root Cause

In the field, the MP binding status of all the links is normal, but one of the link interface has more BERs that increase continuously. Shut down the interface that generates BERs, the service becomes better. After you execute undo shut on the interface and reestablish the MP binding, the service deteriorates again. The reason is that: Currently, the MP binding on the NE16E/08E/05 is packet-based, in other words, it fragmentates the packet and distributes the fragments evenly among the physical links. If one link does not work well and happens to maintain normal transmission of the link maintenance messages, part of the normal service gets lost and has to be retransmitted. However, the faulty link is still in service, keeps generating wrong packets, and has impact on normal service.
