The Interface of the NE40 Directly Connected to the Peer Device Cannot Be Successfully Pinged After Being Configured with ICMP FAST and URPF

Publication Date:  2012-07-27 Views:  79 Downloads:  0

Issue Description

The NE40 connects to the NE80E through a GE interface. The NE80E can be successfully pinged from the NE40, but the NE40 cannot be successfully pinged from the NE80E.
HUAWEI NetEngine40-8 Software(USR)
VRP (R) software Version 5.30(NE40&80 V300R002C01B599)
IPOS Software Version IPOSV100R000C03B599
VRP NE40-8 Software Version VRPV500R003C03B599

Alarm Information

Handling Process

Check the interface. It is found that URPF is configured on this interface. According to the on-site engineer, this interface is also configured with ICMP FAST for prompt response to ping packets of the host.
Undo the ICMP FAST settings. After the deletion, the NE40 can be successfully pinged from the NE80E.

Root Cause

When processing packets, the interface configured with ICMP FAST directly responds to ICMP requests destined to the local address without sending these packets to the CPU of the SRU. When URPF is also configured on this interface, the interface conducts URPF check on the received ICMP packets. The packets failing to pass the URPF check are discarded. Meanwhile, other types of packets can be normally processed.

The ICMP FAST command is not displayed upon the execution of the display cur command, which should be noted during troubleshooting.
