The System Hangs During File System Formatting Because the RH2285 SAS Cable Is Faulty

Publication Date:  2012-07-17 Views:  371 Downloads:  0

Issue Description

At a deployment site, when the RH2285 is not configured with RAID, the hard disk in slot 1 serves as the system disk, and Linux operating system is installed based on the DHCP mode, the system hangs during file system formatting (the progress remains 11%).

Alarm Information

Handling Process

Step 1  Use the spare disk or backup disk to replace the hard disk in slot 1. Install the operating system by network startup to check whether the system still hangs. In this case, after a new hard disk is replaced, the system still hangs during file system formatting.
Step 2  Power off the device. Wear ESD gloves and open the cover. Remove the protective panel from the mainboard. Use a spare SAS cable to replace the SAS cable that connects the LSI-SAS card and server backplane. Power on the device and install the operating system again. The fault is rectified and the operating system is installed.

Root Cause

When the RH2285 is not configured with RAID, the hard disk in slot 1 automatically serves as the system disk during the operating system deployment. Formatting the file system is implemented at this time. If the hard disk in slot 1 or the SAS cable that connects the hard disk to the SAS card is faulty, the formatting fails.
