Backup Exec Fails to Recover the Master Database Because the MS SQL Database Works in Multi-user Mode

Issue Description

Backup software: Backup Exec 12.5; Backup server operating system: Windows Server 2003 SP2; Backed-up database: MS SQL 2003. Backup of the master database without changing the database user mode succeeded; however, the recovery of the master database failed

Handling Process

Set the SQL Server to the single-user mode. Then recover the master database. After the recovery succeeds, the database automatically changes to the multi-user mode. You can choose to recovery other databases.
To set the SQL Server to the single-user mode, do as follows:
1. Stop the SQL Server database in the SQL Server manager.
2. Run the sqlserver.exe -c -m command.

Root Cause

Recovery of the master database succeeds only after the SQL Server is be set to the single-user mode.
