The NetBackup Fails to Back up the Virtual Machine

Publication Date:  2012-07-19  |   Views:  2  |   Downloads:  0  |   Author:  anliku  |   Document ID:  EKB1000007196

Issue Description

At a certain deployment, the S5500 is used as the storage space, the VCenter 4.01 virtual machine software and the NetBackup 6.5 are installed. The VCB 1.5 is used to back up the virtual machine. The backup job fails, and error 156 is reported.

Alarm Information

Handling Process

Step 1  Log in to the proxy server, and enable the cluster option on the UltraPath software of the S5500.
Step 2  Restart the proxy server, and execute the backup job again.

Root Cause

The VMware virtual machine backup requires a VCB proxy server, so the S5500 must be simultaneously mapped to the VMware EXS server and the VCB proxy server so that the VCB proxy server can read the virtual machine files and back up the virtual machine. The application does not belong to a cluster; however, the multipathing software installed on the proxy server and the disabled cluster function make the VMware ESX server exclusively occupy the S5500 storage. As a result, the proxy server is unable to access the S5500 storage and therefore, the backup fails.
