No hard disk is detected during the T3500 operating system installation

Issue Description

A certain deployment uses the T3500 for data storage. Its operating system is installed on single disk over the network. After a period, the customer reports a system disk failure. Huawei Symantec technical support engineer replaces the faulty disk onsite, and then attempts to install the operating system from the CD-ROM. The disk indicators on the front panel are normal, but no hard disk is detected and the installation fails. Huawei Symantec technical support engineer presses Ctrl+C during the system self-check, but cannot start the SAS BIOS interface. Therefore, no hard disk is detected.

Handling Process

  1. When the system is booting, press Del to start the BIOS. On the BIOS interface, choose IPMIBoot > * Boot Settings Configuration and press Enter.
  2. Under * Boot Settings Configuration, set Interrupt 19 Capture to Enabled.
  3. Choose Exit > Save Changes and Exit to save and exit the BIOS.
  4. When the system is rebooting, press Ctrl+C according to the screen message to start the SAS BIOS installer. The 24 hard disks are detected by the installer, which indicates that the replacement disk is normal.
  5. The customer compares the newly installed operating system with the original operating system, and finds that the original operating system is an abridged edition with an incorrect 1068E driver (mptsas). That has caused the failure to detect any hard disk.
  6.  After the customer uses the 1068E driver delivered with the T3500 to compile the kernel and install the operating system, all hard disks are detected.

Root Cause

  1. The replacement disk is faulty.
  2.    The operating system does not load the correct SAS RAID driver.
