Unable to Detect LUNs Mapped by the S5600 on a Windows 2003 Host

Publication Date:  2012-07-20 Views:  62 Downloads:  0
Issue Description
Environment: Two LUNs of each 1 TB are mapped to a Windows 2003 host by the S5600. The multipathing software is not installed. Symptom: Host services become disrupted and disk drive letters are missing.
Alarm Information
Handling Process
Handling procedure (Ensure the health of the S5600 first): 1. By repeating disk scanning in Disk Management on the host, no disk can be detected. 2. By remapping LUNs from the S5600 to the host, no disk can be detected. 3. Disks can be detected in Device Manager but not through disk scanning. Solution: Step 1 Uninstall the Microsoft iSCSI software and the multipathing software, and then restart the server. Step 2 Reinstall the multipathing software, and then scan for LUNs. Step 3 Ensure the data health of the services, and then start them.
Root Cause
Previously, the FC SAN networking was used and the UltraPath software was installed. Later, the Microsoft iSCSI Initiator software was installed and its multipathing function is enabled on two servers to meet additional service requirements, causing the disk detection failure on the host.
The multipathing function provided by the Microsoft iSCSI Initiator software is incompatible with UltraPath. Therefore, do not install both of them on the same server.
