S2600 Storage System Fails to Allocate Hot Spare Disks

Publication Date:  2012-07-22 Views:  734 Downloads:  0
Issue Description
When the S2600 allocates hot spare disks, a selected hard disk fails to be assigned as a hot spare disk. An alarm is generated, indicating that allocating hot spare disks fails.
The prompted message is “The disk is failing and operation failed.”
The ISM version is V001R002.
The controller software version is
The SES firmware version is 33.
Alarm Information
Handling Process
Relevant measures are taken to troubleshoot each of the possible faults:
Step 1  Remove and insert the hard disk. Reassign it as a hot spare disk. The fault persists.
Step 2  Power off the storage system. Remove and insert the hard disk. Power on the storage system. Reassign the hard disk as a hot spare disk. The fault persists.
Step 3  View the health status of the hard disk, and the status is Failing. Check the alarm statistics of the storage system, and a warning “The disk (Disk enclosure 00, slot-id: 05) is failing” exists.
Step 4  Assign another hard disk whose health status is Normal as a hot spare disk. The operation succeeds.
Root Cause
According to the prompted messages on the ISM, the possible causes of the fault include:
1. The hard disk is improperly inserted into the slot.
2. The hard disk is faulty.
3. The firmware of the storage system is defective.
  1. The S2600 ISM has the disk detection function, which predefines some conditions, and sets the health status of the matched hard disks to Failing. Although these hard disks are not really faulty, they cannot be used to create RAID groups or hot spare disks on the ISM.
  2.  On the ISM physical view, the icon of a hard disk that is failing is marked with a cross mark on its upper left corner, as shown in the following figure. (A picture deleted here) Note that on the GUIs of certain manufactures, the cross mark is used to distinguish a hot spare disk. On the S2600 ISM, no special mark is specified for a hot spare disk. Therefore, engineers of other manufactures need to learn about the differences between HS products and their own products, and learn about the unique features of HS products.
