The S2300 Fails to Discover the WWN of the FC HBA Due to an Improper HBA Mode

Publication Date:  2012-07-22 Views:  647 Downloads:  0
Issue Description
A HP blade server directly connects to an S2300 by using optical fibers. When ports are added to the virtual host on the management interface of the storage system, a system alarm is displayed, indicating that no free port is available and the operation fails.
Alarm Information
Handling Process
Step 1  Check the status of port indicators on the S2300 and HP blade server. The physical connections are normal.
Step 2  Restart the operating system of the server. Press Ctrl+Q during the POST phase to enter the BIOS screen of the FC HBA. (The shortcut keys of servers of different manufacturers vary, and the actual prompt on the screen prevails.)
Step 3  Change the value of Connection Options of the FC HBA to O-Loop only.
Step 4  Save the settings. Log out of the BIOS screen. Restart the operating system.
Root Cause
The S2300 direct connection only supports the arbitrated loop mode, but the default working mode of an FC HBA is Point-to-Point only. To enable the compatibility, the HBA mode needs to be changed to Loop only.
It is recommended to exclude the possibilities of physical disconnections. Optical modules and optical fibers are the concern focuses.
