Issue Description

During the deployment of a project, the FC0 and FC1 ports of a host port module for the S5600 are connected to two Brocade 300E switches, and it is found that the status of the FC service ports switches between Unconnected and Connected. By checking the status of switches through the management interface of Brocade 300E, the status of the switch ports is insync (in synchronization), while the connections between the switches and the HBA of an AS are normal, and the storage device can be successfully connected to the HBA of the AS without connecting to any switches.

Product and version information:
  • S5000 series
  • Brocade 300E switches

Alarm Information

None

Handling Process

  1. Adjust the port rates of the S5600 and the FC switches to 2Gbit/s. Then, the status is abnormal.
  2. Yet, by configuring the port modes of the S5600 and the FC switches as L_Port, the status is still abnormal.
  3. By disconnecting one of the links of FC0 and FC1 on a host port module, the status becomes normal.
  4. By reconnecting the links of FC0 and FC1 to FC0 and FC2 respectively, the status remains normal.

Root Cause

  1. It is found that the S5600 can be directly connected to the HBA of the AS without connecting to any switches. Thus, it is inferred that either the working modes of the storage device and the FC switches are unmatched, or the physical links are faulty.
  2. The connections between the FC switches and the HBA of the AS are normal.
  3. However, the connections between the S5600 and the FC switches are abnormal.
Conclusion:
  • The abnormal FC connections occurred due to the inappropriate networking of the FC switches.

Suggestions

On the same host port module of the S5600 (and some other storage devices), the adjacent FC ports use the same FC chip. Thus, it is not recommended to connect such FC ports to FC switches simultaneously; however, you can connect them to ASs simultaneously.
