Blue Screen Occurred Due to the Incompatibility Between SF HA and UltraPath

Publication Date:  2012-07-22 Views:  153 Downloads:  0

Issue Description

In a project, two S5000 storage devices connect to two IBM X3805 ASs through the Brocade FC switch to form a dual-SAN architecture. Veritas Storage Foundation High Availability 5.1 for Windows (SFW HA) creates mirrors for the two storage devices with its disk mirroring function, while Veritas Cluster Server implements the high availability of SQL Server 2005. By using the supplied UltraPath software instead of the DMP function of SFW, users build the application scenario of two storage devices in two cabinets. Later on, hard disk resources are created in the VCS service group, and the manual switchover of the resources is normal. When the VCS service group performs resource migration after a node is powered off, the blue screen occurs on another node and prompts "updsm.sys driver error".

Product and version information:
  • S5000 series
  • The switch is Brocade FC
  • The AS is IBM X3805
  • The OS of the AS is Windows Server 2003 SP2
  • The HBA driver of the AS is Qlogic 2642
  • The software is SFW HA
  • The version of the UltraPath software is V100R001C01SPC281
The typical application scenario of two storage devices in two cabinets is as shown in Figure 1.

Alarm Information

Handling Process

  1. By looking into the Hardware Compatibility List (HCL) of SFW HA 5.1, check whether the DMP of Storage Foundation 5.1 is supported on the S5000 series.
  2. Please visit the Symantec official website to download the DSM packages supported by the Huawei Symantec storage devices.
  3. Uninstall the existing UltraPath software.
  4. Install the DMP software and DSM package that is supported by the Huawei Symantec storage devices.

Root Cause

  1. The problem persists after the HBA driver is replaced to rebuild the networking.
  • It is inferred that the incompatibility exists among the UltraPath software, the SFW software, and the storage devices.

When the Huawei Symantec storage devices are used in combination with the Symantec Storage Foundation software, it is recommended to check the HCL first for compatibility. If they are compatible, please use the DMP function supplied with the software.
