How to solve the problem that when VTL3500 pull out RAID group disk then reinsert it, the disk state become foreign

Publication Date:  2012-10-15 Views:  112 Downloads:  0

Issue Description

VTL3500 uses LSI 8708EM2RAID card to manage disk. If there is hot spare disk in system, the RAID group will degradate when we pull out a disk in a RAID group, but the hot spare disk will enter this RAID group and begin to reconstruct. Then we reinsert the disk (we can insert in the original slot or different slot), the system will recognize this disk has foreign configuration.

Alarm Information

Handling Process

1. Pull out the disk then reinsert it, the system will recognize the disk be this state as below:

2. Right-click this disk, choose “Change to Unconfiged Good” to set the disk state to Unconfiged Good.

3. Right-click RAID card, choose “Scan For Foreign Configuration”.

4. Choose Clear in the popping view, please notice that there is only this disk has Foreign configuration. Click OK.

5. Choose Confirm, and choose Yes.

6. The foreign configuration was cleared successfully.

Root Cause

VTL system configuration has the default information of the disk in this slot, it hasn’t updated automatically after reinserting, and we need to clear manually.
