Introduce the impact that the capacity of the Windows system large volume partition cluster takes on the partition

Issue Description

A S2600 storage disk array has mapped a 19T disk to the Windows2003 operating system, we make it as a master partition, after building the NTFS file system, we implement the formatting operation failed, there reports “Because the capacity of the cluster is bigger than the default value, so the formatting operation can’t complete”.

Handling Process

Configure the capacity of the cluster as 8K, and then we format it successfully.

Root Cause

During the customers building the file system, the capacity of the cluster is selected as the default value, as the following picture displayed:


The default capacity of the cluster is 4K, the capacity of the cluster is configured according to the capacity of the disk:


We can see that the capacity of the cluster which corresponding with the 19T disk is 8K.

Suggestions

While building the large volume partition in the Windows, make sure to implement as the specification table of the cluster configuration, or the formatting operation can’t be completed successfully.
