When trying to backup configuration files of the devices added to eSight the operation is unsuccesful.
Failure reason is unknown failure
The whole backup process of eSight needed to be analyzes so I could find te root cause of this. First I checked connectivity from the eSight server to the devices using the eSight ping tools = OK. Step 2 was to check if ftp works between the eSight server and the devices = OK. I could actually put the files manually using ftp but the backup process still didn't work. After this I started a capture on the interface of the eSight server. There were only snmp packets sent from the server to the devices. The authentication process at the start of the backup process was not begining. And without this authentication there will be no file transfer. From the captures I could see that I the eSight server was sending packets from one interface but was running on another ip address.
So I changed the ip address on which eSight was running on to match the one of the outbound interface (and be in the same network range as the monitored devices). After this change everything worked perfectly.
For the cause analysis I captured packets from the eSight server and analyzed step by step to see what's wrong.
Always run eSight server on an ip address in the same range as the monitored devices. Otherwise the backup process will not work.
To change the ip address eSight runs use the ip address tools in the eSight folder. (You will have to stop & restart eSight for thius kind of change!!!)
