Host Failed to Identify Expanded Space After Storage Capacity Expansion

Issue Description
  •  The host uses LVM or VXVM software.
  •  The original LUN is expanded using the LUN expansion function of the storage system.
  •  After the operation is successful, the disk capacity does not increase.
  •  Reboot the host. The capacity remains the same.

Handling Process
  •  If the host uses LVM or VXVM, do not use the LUN expansion function to expand the LUN capacity.
  •  If the capacity expansion has been performed, the increase of LUN's dynamic capacity cannot be reversed. Therefore, with the customer's approval, back up the data, reconstruct the LUN on the host, and import the data.
  •  If the customer does not consent to stop services for data backup. The problem cannot be solved, and the expanded space cannot be used any more.
Root Cause
Disks under LVM or VXVM management are labeled as SUN type. The geometry parameter of a SUN disk is stored on the disk instead of being obtained from the system. Although, the system can identify the new disk that is expanded, the parameter obtained by the fdisk tool is still the original data. Therefore, you must manually update the geometry parameter. However, compulsive update of this parameter has unknown risks and is not recommended.
