The OS Is Restarted Due to the Kernel Panic Caused by a Hard Disk Fault

Publication Date:  2015-06-18 Views:  143 Downloads:  0
Issue Description
Hardware configuration:
An RH2285 configured with 12 hard disks

The server restarts unexpectedly and starts the operating system (OS) after the restart. The baseboard management controller (BMC) reports an alarm for hard disk 5, as shown in Figure 1.

Handling Process
1.  Use the hard disk test tool to score the hard disk. The hard disk 5 in slot 4 is scored 6.20, as shown in Figure 2. Therefore, hard disk 5 is faulty.

2.  According to the OS logs, an error occurs on the solid-state drive (SSD), which causes the OS to report a kernel panic and the server to restart, as shown in Figure 3.

3.  The hard disks in slots 0 and 1 are configured with RAID 1 properties for installing the OS. Hard disks in slots 2 to 7 are configured with RAID 0 properties. Hard disk in slot 4 is an SSD (disk 5), which causes the server to restart, as shown in Figure 4.

Root Cause
An error occurs on the file system due to the hard disk fault, which causes the kernel panic and server restart.

Replace the faulty hard disk.
