An RH2285 Fails to Upgrade the BMC Using the Web UI

Publication Date:  2015-06-19 Views:  149 Downloads:  0
Issue Description
The baseboard management controller (BMC) upgrade from 1.15 to 2.02 times out, and an error occurs during file loading.

The BMC upgrade times out after telnet is used to view the upgrade status.

Handling Process
1.  Before upgrading the BMC, restart the BMC.

2.  If Huawei customers are running SingleCLOUD V100R002C01, stop the IPMI process before BMC upgrade.

Root Cause
1.  As a protection mechanism, OOM Killer is used to prevent Linux from serious problems by stopping certain processes in the case of insufficient memory. During online BMC upgrade, files are stored in the memory, and the BMC triggers the OOM Killer due to insufficient memory or discontinuous memory space. After the bmcipmi.out process is stopped, the BMC restarts, and the upgrade fails.

2.  SingleCLOUD V100R002C01 for Huawei customers frequently accesses the BMC (five times every second) over the intelligent platform management interface (IPMI). During the BMC upgrade, the central processing unit (CPU) and memory usage is too high. Therefore, the upgrade fails.

You need to take preventive measures before the BMC upgrade.
