The 82599 External NIC of an RH2285 Cannot Be Detected

Publication Date:  2015-06-25 Views:  179 Downloads:  0
Issue Description
Hardware configuration:
RH2285 server, 12 hard disks, 1068E, and 1 Intel 82599 network interface card (NIC)

Run the ifconfig –a command to query the information about all present server NICs. The Intel 82599 has two network ports (eth2_1 and eth2_2); however, only eth2_1 is detected, as shown in Figure 1.

Handling Process
1.  Run the dmesg command to view the dmesg information. The system displays fail to load because unsupported SFP + module type was detected shown in the red box in Figure 2.

2.  Based on the error information in Figure 2, eth2_2 (03:00.1) does not support the optical module. Therefore, the system cannot be loaded, and eth2_2 information cannot be displayed in the system.
Root Cause
Intel 82599 works with only Intel optical modules.
Replace the current optical module with that shipped with Intel 82599. Then the NIC can work properly.

Onsite engineers do not replace the optical module shipped with Intel 82599 at random.
