Issue Description

When install ESXi on the RH2288H V3, there is a error “can't have a partition outside the disk”.

Handling Process

Step1: Use the KVM of iBMC to mount the toolkit iso image, boot the server from the CD-ROM, and start the tool. You can find the guide from the chapter 2 of FusionServer Tools V2R2 Toolkit User Guide 09.

Step2: You will get the main menu after mount. And then input “C” to enter command line.

Stpe3: Run the command “fdisk -l” to check if there is a partition.

From the following picture, you can see a raw disk /dev/sdb with 31.9GB. There is a partition named  /dev/sdb1.

Step4: If there is no partition, we can install ESXi OS . If there is one, we need to delete the partition and then install ESXi.

        How to delete a partition:

1)    Because there are two SD cards and they make up a RAID,  we need to clear the RAID information by the command:

ipmicmd -k "0f 00 30 93 DB 07 00 34 00 00 00 00 00 00 05 00 01 00 00 00 00" smi 0

For the different scene, the command is different.

2)       Run the following command. Note: please replace sdX with actual value in this command. For example, there is a partition named /dev/sdb1, so we should replace sdX with sdb.

dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdX bs=1M count=35000

Root Cause

The SD card have a partition. ESXi can't be installed in a LUN/SD card with partition.
