BIOS upgrade fails on RH1288 v3 Server

Publication Date:  2017-03-27 Views:  303 Downloads:  0
Issue Description

During the server upgrade process the iBMC upgrade is completed successfully, but the corresponding BIOS version can not be installed. The upgrade process stops at 3% mark:

And after that we can see the message “Power off the OS, and then start the BIOS”:

Also we can see the process failed in Operation logs:

Handling Process

We can read the following text in Server Upgrade Guide:

“You can upgrade the BIOS with the OS in powered on or off state. However, you are advised to power off the OS and upgrade the BIOS because the upgrade takes effect only after the server is restarted.”

This actually makes sense when online BIOS upgrade fails because of the following reason: “Power off the OS, and then start the BIOS”.

When we power off the
server and perform the upgrade in offline state – the process goes beyond 3%
mark and finishes successfully:

Root Cause

Seems some process inside the OS is interfering with the online BIOS
upgrade process.

To fix the issue we have to flash new BIOS version while the server is
in Power-Off state.

You are advised to power off the OS and upgrade the BIOS.
