We received a request of generating a new sofware license for SMC2.0. When verifying the ESN provided from the customer's side it has been concluded that the ESN currently running on the SMC is not the same as the initial one
AS the SMC is a sofware product and does not have an SN, once it is being installed on the Server it's ESN is being automatically generated based on the MAC address of the Server.
therefore, possible caused of the ESN changes are as follow:
1. Physical hardware modification - example we are using a Huawei server which has 2 network card, each of the network card has it's own MAC address, if we switch the cable from one port to another the ESN will change automatically based on the Card's MAC address.
2. Any modification that can lead to the MAC address change of the Server - the server is running on a virtual machine and perform a restore of a server.
in our case the customer was having his SMC server running on a virtual Machine, due to the fact that the customer forgot the administrator password the only option was to restore the Virtual machine from the backup. Once the restore was made the MAC address has changed as well, which leaded to the change of the ESN
The solution to this problem are as follow:
1. If there was a physical change done-> revert to the initial setup
2. If is a virtual machine and the MAC address changes automatically due to a restore the only solution would be to generate a new license based on the new ESN.
