BIOS password cannot be reset on RH2288H v3 Server

Publication Date:  2017-10-31 Views:  1059 Downloads:  0

Issue Description

After upgrading the server BIOS to version 3.75 (may be applicable for other versions also) user cannot access BIOS settings with default password, although it was never changed:

Even after user resets the BIOS password to default value (check the guide below) it’s still invalid.

Alarm Information

no alarms in the system

Handling Process

The standard procedure of BIOS password reset is the following.

1.  Power off server and plug out power cables.

2.  Plug out the BIOS battery and short circuit
the battery slot for at least 15 seconds:

3.  Plug in the battery and power on server.

But in some case this procedure doesn’t help and we see the error message again:

If the default BIOS password is not valid even after reset procedure, we must do the following:

1.  Downgrade the BIOS firmware to earlier version, for example, 3.63.

2.  Check the BIOS default password is working.

3.  Upgrade the BIOS back to 3.75 version.

Root Cause

Looks like it’s some kind of a bug in the latest BIOS firmware.

To fix the issue we have to flash previous BIOS version and then flash newest version again.

You are advised to check the password is valid after upgrade the BIOS.
