Adding an HBA to the Backup Product VTL6900-AIO Causes VTL Services to Stop

Issue Description

A VTL6900-AIO is deployed at a site. After a QLogic HBA is added, VTL services cannot be started.

Handling Process

1. In the address box of a browser, enter http://IP or https://IP:httpsport, where IP indicates the IP address of the eth2 management network port on the VTL server, and httpsport indicates the HTTPS service port that cannot be accessed.

2. Check the status of the VTL's underlying operating system. It is found that all services are in the Stop state.

3. Run the vtl start command. The command output is as follows:



It is found that a new HBA is added. In addition, the VTL enters the Stop state after being started.

4. In the event of VTL-I, VTL-IS, VTL-SL, and VTL-AIO specifications, load the QLogic HBA driver. Before loading or uninstalling an HBA driver, disable the target mode of the Fibre Channel port and stop the services of the VTL service system. You are advised to uninstall the existing HBA driver before loading an HBA driver.

4.1 The example of using the vtl stop all command is as follows:

4.2 The example of using the vtl configtgt command is as follows:

5. Log in to the device again. The login is successful.

Root Cause

1. During service startup, the VTL detects that a new HBA is added but fails to load the driver. As a result, other VTL services fail to start, causing a failure to log in to the ISM.

2. In the event of VTL-HA and VTL-HAS specifications, load the QLogic NPIV HBA driver. In the event of VTL-I, VTL-IS, VTL-SL, and VTL-AIO specifications, load the QLogic HBA driver. Before loading or uninstalling an HBA driver, disable the target mode of the Fibre Channel port and stop the services of the VTL service system. You are advised to uninstall the existing HBA driver before loading an HBA driver.

Solution

1. Check whether the version is changed.

2. View each service's status to check whether any service is in the Stop state.

3. Check whether any hardware is added or deleted without following the correct operation procedure.

Suggestions

1. Pay attention to the product version update information. Update software and firmware versions promptly.

2. Analyze both the hardware and software to diagnose problems.
