Failed to Detect the External Intel 82599 NIC on an RH2285

Publication Date:  2018-11-02  |   Views:  983  |   Downloads:  0  |   Document ID:  EKB1001961593

Issue Description

Fault symptom: Run the ifconfig –a command to check the presence status of the server NICs. Two Intel 82599 NICs (eth2_1 and eth2_2) exist in the system. However, only one NIC (eth2_1) is detected.

Handling Process

1. Run the dmesg command to view the dmesg information. The system displays "failed to load because unsupported SFP+ module type was detected."

Figure 2 dmesg information

2. The error information in Figure 2 shows that the eth2_2 NIC (03:00.1) does not support the optical module type. As a result, the system fails to load the eth2_2 NIC, and the eth2_2 NIC is not detected.

3. The Intel 82599 works only with original Intel optical modules.

4. After the optical modules are replaced with the original Intel optical modules, the NIC is restored.

Root Cause

This problem is caused by manual operations. The Intel 82599 NIC is delivered with original Intel optical modules. Optical modules of other vendors are not supported.

Replace the optical modules with the original optical modules delivered with the Intel 82599 NIC.

Experience: Do not replace the original Intel optical modules.
