On a large Layer 2 network, all user gateways are deployed on the ME60.

 

Symptom:

Users connected to the master and slave ME60E-X8s in a stack frequently go offline and then online.

Handling Process

1.Check alarm information on CE128. It is found many MAC address flapping alarms exist.

2.Check the configurations of the master and slave switches. It is found that the authentication mode configured for dynamic IPv6 users on the interfaces of the master and slave switches are inconsistent.

The authentication configuration of IPv6 users is missing on the slave switch (with the snapshot displayed on the right). As a result, the slave switch fails to obtain user data and reclaims the DHCPv6 information received from the user. As a result, MAC address flapping occurs after the user goes offline and then online.

 

3.Add the authentication configuration of IPv6 users on the slave switch.

After the authentication-method-ipv6 ppp web command is run on the slave switch, users will not go offline unexpectedly.

 

Root Cause


Synchronize the authentication configuration between the master and slave switches. After the authentication-method-ipv6

configuration is added to the slave switch, the problem is resolved.

The IPv6 authentication configuration is missing on the interfaces of the slave ME60-X8. Based on a comparison of the configurations of the master and slave switches, it is found that the authentication-method-ipv6 configuration is missing on the slave switch. The slave switch cannot dynamically synchronize IPv6 user data and reclaims the DHCPv6 information received from users. As a result, users go offline and then online, causing MAC address flapping.



Solution

Synchronize the authentication configuration between the master and slave switches. After the authentication-method-ipv6 configuration is added to the slave switch, the problem is resolved.

Suggestions

When configuring dual-device hot backup on ME60s, ensure that configuration consistency between the master and slave ME60s. If the configurations are inconsistent, users may frequently go offline and then online, causing MAC address flapping.
