Enabling SSD Caching for the RAID Group of the 3108 RAID Controller Card Fails

Issue Description

SSD caching cannot be enabled for a RAID group consisting of RAID 1 created using two SAS hard disks, RAID 5 created using six NL-SAS hard disks, and RAID 1 created using two SSDs.

Alarm Information

Check the alarm information as follows:
1. Create a cache disk.

2. Enable cache error report for the DATA RAID.

Based on the data attribute settings, it is found that SSD caching is not enabled.

SSD caching still cannot be enabled even after the following configuration.


Handling Process

1. Connect to the Storcli tool, for example, MR6.11 shown in the red box in the following figure.

 If SSD caching has been set on the GUI, skip steps 1 and 2.

2. Use the toolkit to enter the diagnosis mode and view the information about the hard disks used for CacheCade. Record the EID:Slt (EID indicates the hard disk backplane number and Slt indicates the slot number of the physical hard disk).

/opt/MegaRAID/storcli/storcli64 /c0/eall/sall show

3. Create a CacheCade RAID group.

/opt/MegaRAID/storcli/storcli64 /c0 add vd cac raidN drives=Elt:SltX,Elt:SltY   //N indicates the RAID group level, and EID:SltX,EID,SltY… indicates the physical hard disks added to the RAID group. Ensure that the number of hard disks is consistent with the configured RAID level, and separate multiple hard disks by commas (,).

4. Check the status of the CacheCade RAID group.

/opt/MegaRAID/storcli/storcli64 /c0/vall show     //In the command output, the value Cac of TYPE indicates a CacheCade RAID group and the value of VD indicates the ID of the RAID group. If the Cac column is empty, the CacheCade RAID group has not been assigned to other RAID groups.

5. Enable SSD caching for a RAID group.

/opt/MegaRAID/storcli/storcli64 /c0/vN set ssdcaching=on  //N indicates the ID of the RAID group, that is, the RAID group for which SSD caching is enabled. VD1 is used as an example.

6. Check the SSD caching status of a RAID group.

/opt/MegaRAID/storcli/storcli64 /c0/vall show        //If the Cac column in the command output is not empty, the CacheCade RAID group has not been assigned to the RAID group.



Root Cause

The CacheCade RAID group is not allocated to other RAID groups.

Solution

Manually enable SSD caching for a RAID group. For example:
/opt/MegaRAID/storcli/storcli64 /c0/vN set ssdcaching=on   //N indicates the ID of the RAID group, that is, the RAID group for which SSD caching is enabled. VD1 is used as an example.

Pay attention to the SSD caching status, as shown in the following figure.
