Device description: BH22+BR25e. The operating system is RH5. After the operating system is installed, it starts in GUI mode by default. To meet the customer's requirement, the startup mode is changed to command lines.
1. Enter the single user mode.
The entrance mode varies with the startup programs of the operating systems. In this case, the startup wizard program is GNU GRUB. To enter the single user mode, do as follows: as the GRUB is started (see appendix 1), press E to go to the editing screen. Move the pointer to the KERNEL line (see appendix 2), press E again to go to another editing screen. On this screen, type SINGLE or I in the end and press Enter (see appendix 3) and then B (see appendix 4).
2. Change file /etc/inittab.
Run vi /etc/inittab and the following message is displayed:
# Default runlevel. The runlevels used by RHS are:
# 0 – halt (Do NOT set initdefault to this)
# 1 – Single user mode
# 2 – Multiuser, without NFS (The same as 3, if you do not have networking)
# 3 – Full multiuser mode
# 4 – unused
# 5 – X11
# 6 – reboot (Do NOT set initdefault to this)
Modify id:5:initdefault: to id:3:initdefault:.
Save this setting and restart the system.
The system starts in GUI mode by default. To change it into command lines, you need to enter the single user mode and modify the startup mode in file /etc/inittab
