A Hard Disk Cannot be Detected After it is Added Online to a RAID Group Again

Publication Date:  2012-07-19 Views:  364 Downloads:  0
Issue Description
The VTL3500 uses the LSI 8708EM2RAID card to mange hard disks. After a hard disk is removed from a RAID group, the RAID group is degraded. Then, a hot spare disk replaces the removed disk in the RAID group and starts reconstruction. When you reinsert the removed disk into the original slot or another slot, Foreign configuration is displayed and automatic copy back cannot be performed in the RAID group.
Alarm Information
Handling Process
To remove Foreign configuration, do as follows:
Step 1  Reinsert the hard disk and the Foreign configuration is displayed.
Step 2  Right-click this hard disk and choose Change to Unconfiged Good.
Step 3  Right-click RAID card and choose Scan For Foreign Configuration.
Step 4  Choose Clear and verify that only this hard disk has Foreign configuration. Click OK.
Step 5  Select Confirm and click Yes.
Step 6  Clearing the configuration information is successful.
Root Cause
This is caused by characteristics of the LSI RAID card.
When you replace a hard disk and find that the information about the original RAID group exists on spare disks, you can follow the previous steps to clear the original configuration information. Then, the hard disk can be correctly identified.
