Adjusting the BFD Detection Time

Context

The local detection multiplier, minimum interval for receiving BFD packets, and minimum interval for sending BFD packets determine the detection time of a BFD session:

Detection time = Local detection multiplier x Max (Minimum interval for receiving BFD packets/Minimum interval for sending BFD packets)

You can adjust the detection time of a BFD session by increasing or reducing the local detection multiplier, minimum interval for receiving BFD packets, or minimum interval for sending BFD packets based on actual networking. On an unstable link, if a small detection time is used, a BFD session may flap. You can increase the detection time of the BFD session. Generally, the default values are recommended. Do not randomly change the local detection multiplier, minimum interval for receiving BFD packets, and minimum interval for sending BFD packets.

To reduce usage of system resources, when a BFD session is detected in Down state, the system adjusts the minimum interval for receiving BFD packets and the minimum interval for sending BFD packets to random values greater than 1000 ms. When the BFD session becomes Up, the configured intervals are restored.

Procedure

  1. Run system-view

    The system view is displayed.

  2. Run bfd session-name

    The BFD session view is displayed.

  3. Run min-tx-interval interval

    The minimum interval for sending BFD packets is set.

    By default, the minimum interval for sending BFD packets is 10 ms if the MPU has the ES0D00FSUA00 card installed or the MPU is EH1D2SRUDC00/EH1D2SRUDC01. Otherwise, the minimum interval for sending BFD packets is 1000 ms.

  4. Run min-rx-interval interval

    The minimum interval for receiving BFD packets is set.

    By default, the minimum interval for receiving BFD packets is 10 ms if the MPU has the ES0D00FSUA00 card installed or the MPU is EH1D2SRUDC00/EH1D2SRUDC01. Otherwise, the minimum interval for receiving BFD packets is 1000 ms.

    NOTE:

  5. Run detect-multiplier multiplier

    The local detection multiplier is set.

    By default, the local detection multiplier is 3.
