If RNC is connected in your network, soft parameter P96 BIT: 7 in UMG can improve the voice quality at air interface by discarding UP frame whose FQC field is 2.

UP is user plane protocol and FQC is the part of UP header .Below is the description

 

Description of the IU_UP/NB_UP Protocol

The user plane (UP) protocol is used to convey user data associated to Radio Access Bearers (RABs).

The UP protocol can be classified into the IU_UP protocol and the NB_UP protocol based on the interface over which it is used. The control procedures of the two protocols, however, are the same.

·         IU_UP: The Iu interface is used to transfer user data and user plane signaling between an RNC and an MGW. The IU_UP protocol is used for UP operations performed between an RNC and an MGW.

·         NB_UP: The Nb interface is used to transfer user data and user plane signaling between two MGWs. The NB_UP protocol is used for UP operations performed between two MGWs.

Modes of operation of the IU_UP/NB_UP protocol are defined as follows:

·         Transparent mode: This mode is intended for those RABs that do not require any particular feature from the IU_UP/NB_UP protocol other than transfer of user data. In this mode, no UP frame is sent. The typical services in this mode are H.324M video phone (VP) services and transparent data services.

·         Support mode for predefined service distribution unit (SDU) size: This mode is intended for those RABs that require some procedure control functions and some data streams specific functions while the sizes of the user data being transferred can vary in a predefined manner. The typical services in this mode are voice services and non-transparent data services.

Scenario Description

The IU_UP/NB_UP protocol is used during the negotiation in the user plane of the Iu or Nb interface. The protocol in support mode for pre-defined SDU sizes can be used in any of the following scenarios:

1.     UP initialization and exchange of bearer path information between an RNC and an MGW or between two MGWs.

2.     Time alignment between an RNC and an MGW or between two MGWs.

3.     Rate control between an RNC and an MGW or between two MGWs. This procedure controls the allowed rate sets between transmission entities.

4.     Handling of error events between an RNC and an MGW or between two MGWs. This procedure controls fault monitoring information.

5.     Transfer of user data between an RNC and an MGW or between two MGWs.
