Family-specific traffic sharing is a package that is aimed to improve the
competitiveness of carriers and meet diverse service requirements of
subscribers. In a family-specific traffic sharing package,
one subscriber is configured as the primary subscriber and other
subscribers are configured as secondary subscribers. The primary and
secondary subscribers share the same quota and have equal access to
services.

This feature applies to the following
scenarios:

  • A subscriber has multiple terminals such as mobile stations
(MSs) and data cards, and subscribes to a service package. This feature
allows the subscriber to access services using the same account on
    different terminals.
  • A family has multiple terminals such as MSs
and data cards, and subscribes to a service package. This feature
allows members in the family to share the service package.

In the example shown in Figure 1,a family has subscribed to a family-specific traffic sharing package.
There are two members (subscribers) in the family. The policy and
charging rules function (PCRF) associates two subscriber
identifiers. The two subscriber identifiers share the same flat monthly
package, and traffic of the primary and secondary subscribers is counted
toward the family quota. The more data the family members use, the
smaller the available bandwidth is.
The available bandwidth decreases for both the primary and secondary
subscribers when the total traffic volume reaches a specified threshold.
See Figure 2.
