The First Huawei ICT Competition Southern Pacific 2018-2019 Regional Final Successfully Completed

[Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, April 17, 2019] The Regional Final and Award Ceremony of the First Huawei ICT Competition Southern Pacific was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on April 11, 2019.

The competition involved top universities from Singapore, Australia, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines. Deputy Minister of Education, Malaysia - YB Puan Teo Nie Ching, Vice Chancellor of University of Malaya (UM) - Datuk Ir. (Dr.) Abdul Rahim Hj. Hashim, CEO of Huawei Technologies (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd - Michael Yuan, and CEO of Infosyte Sdn Bhd, Huawei Authorized Learning Partner (HALP) - Yap Chee Yuen and other honored guests from government and universities, partners as well as Huawei were present in the event. In addition, the competition was widely reported by local social media and thus greatly improving Huawei's brand awareness.

Since June 2018, Huawei has held Huawei ICT competition and related talent development activities in 15 cities in Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Australia, attracting 1000+ students from 23 top universities from these 5 countries. After a very competitive national level round, 12 teams of 36 students stood out from the initial competition to take part in the regional finals on April 11.

The regional final consists of network and cloud track. The network track covers routing and switching, network security, WLAN, and cloud track content covering advanced cutting-edge ICT technologies, such as cloud computing, big data, and artificial intelligence. The initial competition focuses on the students' theoretical knowledge. The national competition and regional finals focus on lab practical and team cooperation capability.

During the regional finals, the team teachers also participated in the Trainer Workshop.At the meeting, Mr. Hekai, Director of Huawei Southern Pacific Enterprise Channel Service & Solution Dept. and Mr. Danny, Deputy Director of Huawei Enterprise BG Talent Ecosystem Development Dept. led the teachers to discuss Huawei's talent ecosystem, Huawei's ICT Academy operations, Huawei's ICT competition, Huawei's talent alliance initiatives and Huawei's Talent Elite Club.

Finally, Telkom University (Tel-U) of Indonesia, University of Malaya (UM) of Malaysia and Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) of Indonesia won the respective prize in order of First, Second and Third prizes in the regional finals Network track. Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) of Singapore won the First prize of the cloud track. The top 2 prize winners of the competition will be representing Southern Pacific to attend the global final of Huawei ICT competition in Shenzhen, China on 25-26 May 2019.

Speaking at the ceremony, YB Puan Teo Nie Ching, Deputy Minister of Education, Malaysia, said: "The ICT industry is very challenging. We need to ensure that today's young people are ready to meet future challenges. Skill development and knowledge sharing require cooperation between universities and industries.

Malaysia and other regions in the world need high-quality graduates to meet industry requirements. The Ministry of Education of Malaysia supports cooperation between academic institutions and industry institutions to ensure that college graduates can master the skill requirements of the ICT industry."

The ICT Competition aims to continuously convey the future talents of digital transformation for the industry chain, promote the efficient matching of talent supply and demand, and further build a sustainable talent ecosystem.

The theme of "Connection•Glory•Future" is to connect government organizations, higher education institutions, training partners, and industry enterprises to build a platform for global students to compete and communicate with each other in the ICT industry, and also to recognize and reward students' achievements in the ICT field, and provide direction and guidance for their future career development.
