Application Scope Applicable to S5000, S2600, S2000, and V1000 storage devices that are configured with Seagate ST31000340NS, ST3500320NS, ST3750330NS, and ST3250310NS ES.2 disks and delivered from January 2009 to September 2010.

Precaution Requirement 1. For distinguished sites in China, the rectification must be complete before 2013-04-30.
2. For the other sites in China, if annual disk fault rates of these sites are higher than 4%, central replacement is provided.
3. For the sites out of China, central replacement of Seagate ES.2 disks is not provided for sites out of China. If these sites have faulty Seagate ES.2 disks, engineers can apply for spare parts through the normal procedure

[Problem Description]
Seagate ES.2 SATA disks have incurred high disk fault rate on live networks of multiple sites. According to statistics, there are over 100 sites whose annual disk fault rates are higher than the industry average value 4%.
[Trigger Condition]
Because of the defective disk substrate flatness control process and insufficient design margin, heads of Seagate ES.2 SATA disks easily rub with ridges on the substrates, causing bad sectors or head degradation.
[Impact and Risk]
Sites that use Seagate ES.2 disks suffer too many faulty disks. Frequent replacement of faulty disks results in doubts about Huawei storage products and low customer satisfaction. If a RAID group has multiple faulty disks that are not replaced in time, the RAID group will fail and data will be lost.
[Measures and Solutions]
The Oceanspace S5000 series, Oceanspace S2000 series, and Oceanspace V1000 series have abandoned Seagate ES.2 disks since November, 2010.

Up to now, disk fault rates at sites out of China are normal, so central replacement of Seagate ES.2 disks is not provided for sites out of China. If these sites have faulty Seagate ES.2 disks, engineers can apply for spare parts through the normal procedure (Spare parts disk BOM refer to appendix 6).

Huawei frontline service engineers stat the sites and number of Seagate ES.2 disks at the site, and applies spare disks through Batch Replacement Workflow.
