Displaying the Device Serial Number

Displaying the Device Serial Number

You can use the display commands to view the serial number of a device.

Context

A device serial number includes a unique equipment serial number (ESN) of the device and a serial number (SN) of each independent component (for example, card, power module, and fan module).

When you need technical assistance or have to apply for a license, you need to provide the device serial number.

There are two types of electronic labels on a device panel. Figure 1-1 shows the old label, and Figure 1-2 displays the new label. The device panel of some models already uses the new label. When applying for a device license that uses the new electronic label, you need to combine the panel's PN and SN numbers. The combination rule is to insert the PN between the second and third digits of the SN, which form the device's ESN. For example, if a device's PN is 02353BVK and the SN is 101990046841, the device's ESN will be 1002353BVK1990046841. You can then use 1002353BVK1990046841 to apply for a device license.

Procedure

  • Run the display esn command to view the serial number of a device.
  • Run the display sn [ [ interface ] abnormal | all | interface interface-type interface-number | license | slot slot-id ] command to view the SNs of components on the device.

What Are the Differences Between ESN and SN?

When you need to apply for a license, you need to provide the equipment serial number (ESN).

When you require after-sales services, you need to provide the serial number (SN) of a component on the device.

The ESN is a unique identifier of a device. When an independent component of a device is faulty, you need to provide the SN of the component. For details, see Displaying the Device Serial Number.
