Configuring Dynamic Load Balancing

Background

The load balancing function applies to scenarios where there is a high degree of overlap between APs' coverage ranges. If APs engaged in load balancing are far from each other, a STA may connect to a distant AP, which affects wireless experience of users.

Static load balancing limits the maximum number of AP radios to 16 and allows only radios on the same frequency band to join a load balancing group. Additionally, a static load balancing group needs to be manually specified. Dynamic load balancing overcomes the limitations of static load balancing.

After a STA connects to an AP, the AC checks whether the AP reaches the load balancing threshold, and determines whether to steer the STA to a neighboring AP that meets load balancing requirements based on the load balancing algorithm.

Procedure

  1. Run system-view

    The system view is displayed.

  2. Run wlan

    The WLAN view is displayed.

  3. Run rrm-profile name profile-name

    An RRM profile is created and the RRM profile view is displayed.

  4. Run undo sta-load-balance dynamic disable

    Dynamic load balancing is enabled.

    By default, the dynamic load balancing function is enabled.

  5. (Optional) Configure the dynamic load balancing mode and related parameters.

    Configure dynamic load balancing based on the number of users.

    1. Run the sta-load-balance dynamic sta-number start-threshold start-threshold-value

      The start threshold for dynamic load balancing based on the number of users is set.

      By default, the start threshold for load balancing in a dynamic load balancing group is 10.

    2. Run sta-load-balance dynamic sta-number gap-threshold { percentage percentage-value | number number-value }

      The channel load difference threshold for load balancing in a dynamic load balancing group is set.

      By default, the load difference threshold of a dynamic load balancing group is specified based on the number of users, and the default value is 3.

    3. (Optional) Run sta-load-balance dynamic rssi-threshold rssi-threshold

      The RSSI threshold of members in the dynamic load balancing group is configured.

      By default, the RSSI threshold of member devices in a dynamic load balancing group is –65 dBm.

    4. (Optional) Run sta-load-balance dynamic rssi-diff-gap diff-gap-threshold

      The RSSI difference threshold of members in the dynamic load balancing group is configured.

      By default, the RSSI difference threshold of members in a dynamic load balancing group is 5 dB.

    5. (Optional) Run sta-load-balance dynamic probe-report interval interval

      The interval at which Probe frames are reported is set.

      By default, Probe frames are reported at an interval of 120 seconds.

    6. (Optional) Run sta-load-balance dynamic btm-fail-times btm-fail-times

      The number of attempts to steer STAs in BTM mode is set.

      By default, the maximum number of attempts to steer STAs in BTM mode is 5.

    7. (Optional) Run sta-load-balance dynamic deauth-fail-times deauth-fail-times

      The number of attempts to steer STAs in Deauthentication mode is set.

      By default, the maximum number of attempts to steer STAs in deauthentication mode is 0.

    8. (Optional) Run sta-load-balance dynamic steer-restrict probe-threshold probe-threshold

      The number of times non-target APs suppress STA Probe frames during STA steering is set.

      By default, the maximum number of times non-target APs suppress probing of STAs during STA steering is 5.

    9. (Optional) Run sta-load-balance dynamic steer-restrict auth-threshold auth-threshold

      The number of times non-target APs suppress STA Authentication frames during STA steering is set.

      By default, the maximum number of times non-target APs suppress authentication of STAs during STA steering is 0.

    10. (Optional) Run sta-load-balance dynamic steer-restrict restrict-time restrict-time

      The time for suppressing STA association with non-target APs during STA steering is set.

      By default, the duration within which non-target APs suppress association of STAs during STA steering is 5 seconds.

  6. Run quit

    Return to the WLAN view.

  7. Bind the RRM profile to a radio profile.
    1. Run radio-2g-profile name profile-name or radio-5g-profile name profile-name

      The 2G or 5G radio profile view is displayed.

    2. Run rrm-profile profile-name

      The RRM profile is bound to the 2G or 5G radio profile.

    3. Run quit

      Return to the WLAN view.

  8. Bind the radio profile to an AP group or a specific AP. For the detailed procedure, see Binding a Radio Profile.

Verifying the Configuration

  • Run the display rrm-profile name profile-name command to check settings of dynamic load balancing parameters.
  • Run the display radio-2g-profile name profile-name command to check the RRM profile referenced by a 2G radio profile.
  • Run the display radio-5g-profile name profile-name command to check the RRM profile referenced by a 5G radio profile.
  • Run the display station neighbor sta-mac mac-address command to check the neighbor list of the specified STA.
