NE40E Troubleshooting Guide
Recovering Device Management in Password Missing or Misoperation Scenarios
Using the Console Port to Format the Device to Be Upgraded During Device Startup
- A device restart interrupts services. Exercise caution when you perform this operation.
- This operation clears the configuration of the main control board and clears the configuration file, resulting in configuration loss. Exercise caution when you perform this operation. You are advised to periodically back up the device configuration file.
- The Ctrl+B menu may vary between hardware devices, but the basic functions are similar.
Prerequisites
- A console port is available for device login.
- The device can be restarted.
Procedure
- Log in to the device through the console port.
Restart the device.
Press Ctrl+B within 3 seconds after the message "Press Ctrl+B to enter Main Menu... 3" is displayed.
Enter the password to access the BootLoad menu.
- For V800R011C10 and earlier versions, the default passwords for the BootLoad system and BIOS system are both WWW@HUAWEI. Using the default password has security risks. You are advised to set a new password after login and change it periodically. The two passwords are independent of each other, and you can change them separately in their menus.
- For V800R012C00 and later versions, you are required to set a password upon the first login. You can press Ctrl+R to clear the existing password or run the set boot password command to change the existing password.
- After an upgrade, the device still uses the original BIOS system menu password. You are advised to change this password and regularly update it.
- A new password must be a string of no less than six characters with at least two of the following types of characters: uppercase letters, lowercase letters, digits, and special characters.

- Select Modify parameters to set the server address and password and specify the file to be downloaded. In this situation, the SFTP server must be connected to the device through a management network port.
- The management network port is usually located on the chassis or main control board of a device. The name of the management network port may vary according to the device, such as ETH/OAM, ETH, and MGMT-ETH. For details, see the hardware description of the corresponding product.
- You can use a dedicated SFTP server on the network or configure a PC as an SFTP server.
- If you use a dedicated SFTP server, you are advised to connect the server to the network interface of the device.
NOTE: Net type define: 0(SFTP) 1(FTP) 2(TFTP) Please check network parameters: ENTER = no change; '.' = clear; Ctrl+C = quit FTP type(0:SFTP 1:FTP 2:TFTP) : 0 - //The FTP service type is SFTP. Local IP mask : 255.255.255.0 - //Configure the mask for the IP address of the local device. FTP username : root - //Enter the username of the FTP server.
- After setting the parameters, select Update software and Update system software with disk format to upload the file through CF card formatting. Wait until the device is started.
If you select Update system software with disk format, the CF card is formatted. If no backup is available, the configuration file may be lost after the CF card is formatted. To avoid this situation, select Update system software. When uploading the new configuration file, ensure that the name of the new configuration file is different from that of the old configuration file.

The system software package may fail to be downloaded. If the failure occurs repeatedly, verify SFTP configurations, restart the service, and download the package again.
- If the message "Please Press ENTER." is displayed, the device has successfully started with base configuration.
Please Press ENTER. //The device has started with base configuration.
Press Enter and set a new console port login password. Then log in to the device.
- After the login succeeds, set an address for the management network port and complete other settings.
Clearing a Console Port Login Password by Pressing Ctrl+B During Device Startup
- You are advised to use this method to clear the password without deleting the original configuration file.
